HLO Healthy Eating Recipe Heartsmart Mixed Berry Pancakes

The wife and I had a craving for pancakes one night so I decided to try them healthier! Finding a super simple recipe right on the box of the Heartsmart mix box, I just added frozen (thawed) mixed berries to the mix and wow were they great! One laddle full made the perfect size flapjack and they tasted awesome. A no-brainer substitute for traditional mixes.

To make this you’ll need:

HLO Healthy Eating Recipe CrockPot Turkey Chili

Combining my love of chili with the ease of the slow cooker, I tried a super easy all day chili using lean ground turkey, and a real basic chili recipe. The only prep was dicing a few veggies, then it all simmered for 8 hours – perfect for making while you’re at work! While it did come out very well, I’ll make a variation next time, at least kicking up the spices (and keeping the wife out of it!).

To make this you’ll need:
Lean ground turkey
Chili beans
Diced tomatoes
Onion
Green pepper
Low sodium chicken broth
Chili powder
Garlic powder
Onion powder
Cumin
Pepper
Ground red pepper

HLO Healthy Eating Recipe Spicy Crock Pot Pork Tacos

We’re taking a spicy ride down to Mexico this time, going for some fiery (or not depending on if you are a woosie or not) pulled pork tacos with authentic flavor! These are very lean, very low in sodium and fat since it’s all flavor from the spices. If you want to top it with anything else like sour cream or cheese go right ahead but I’ll tell you what, cook it as-is and try it first I doubt you’ll need anything else! The corn tortillas REALLY give it an awesome contrast of texture and flavor bite too, making for the perfect little treat for dinner.

To make this you’ll need:
Pork shoulder
Low sodium chicken broth
Hot peppers of your choice
Chili pepper seasoning of your choice
Salt
Pepper
Onion
Onion powder
Garlic powder
Cumin
Corn tortillas

HLO Healthy Eating Recipe Smoked Turkey Sausage And Cajun Shrimp Gumbo Over Rice

This was something I whipped up from scratch on a whim, just using my past experience with portions and techniques to bring something out of my head I thought would taste great – and it did! Super easy to make, not expensive at all and really delicious. NO SALT added at all and it’s not needed in the slightest. The spice mix is great for anyone that loves heat but nothing overpowers. The smokey sausage was perfect for the mix and very simple to do. It’s a set it and forget it kind of recipe so give it a shot!

To make this you’ll need:
Raw shrimp
Turkey Sausage
Smoke wood
Green pepper
Fat-free low sodium chicken broth
Onion powder
Ground pepper
Shrimp & Crab Boil extract

While I was in Vegas we splurged one night, eating at an Italian place in the Venetian. I had one of the most scrumptious sauces ever, on a seafood fettuccine. It was infused with smoky salmon goodness and I thought – hey, I can do this! So here’s my HLO version, minus the heavy cream and butter of course – but full of really delicious flavor! It reheats very well, I’ve been eating it for days now!

To make this you’ll need:
Raw shrimp
Large scallops
Salmon
Fat-free 1/2 & 1/2
Dill
Garlic
Olive oil
Onion
Salt
Pepper
Lemon Pepper seasoning

HLO Healthy Eating Recipe Spicy Smoked Pulled Chicken Sandwich

I of course LOVE BBQ and smoked meats, and really miss doing some of my favorites since I started doing HLO. But chicken is still awesome for you and easy to get great dishes out of, so I remade one of my classics, the pulled pork BBQ sandwich by using slow smoked chicken and great spices! The work is very easy, just trimming some fat. It’s extremely economical if you buy smart – and it’s PACKED with flavor. The spice is of course optional, season your heat to taste, but the base rub is great for anything you do in addition. The sauce is just enough to coat, nothing crazy at all.

To make this you’ll need:
Chicken (quarters or whole)
Onion powder
Chili powder(s) of your choice
Garlic powder
Thyme
Buns
Neutral BBQ sauce
Apple cider vinegar
